Undergraduate Linguistics
LING 320: General Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence
The University of Hawai'i at Mānoa
Spring and Fall 2024
I am currently the instructor of record for the introductory undergraduate linguistics course at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa.
High School STEM
I teach high school chemistry and physics at 'Iolani School in Honolulu. Previously, I taught chemistry and computer science (as well as linguistics and international development electives) at The Winsor School in Boston.
Training and Community Development
CoLang Workshop
Community Radio as a Vehicle for Language Revitalization
CoLang, June 2024
In this workshop, we examined various community radio models and discussed best practices for establishing and sustaining a community radio station. Over the course of our four sessions, students planned and implemented their own short radio segments that address a pedagogical need. In the process, they were introduced to interviewing techniques, broadcasting norms, programming strategies, business planning, and audio recording/editing tools. The course also provided a platform for participants with community radio backgrounds to share their insights and experiences. My hope is that students left the course equipped with the foundational knowledge they need to launch an indigenous language radio station within their own communities.
Language Documentation Training Center
The Language Documentation Training Center
The University of Hawai'i at Mānoa
LDTC provides tailored training and support for speakers of endangered, indigenous, and under-documented languages who wish to engage in documentation and revitalization efforts. Through a series of weekly seminars, they are introduced to the basics of linguistic description and analysis, audio/video recording, elicitation, archiving, and pedagogical resource creation. Community members work closely with linguistics graduate students at UH Mānoa. In my capacity as co-director, I planned and led training sessions, fundraising events, and speaker series.
Endangered Languages Project
I have lectured on audio/video recording techniques, morphology, and syntax for language documentation to international audiences through the Endangered Languages Project webinar series.
MIT D-Lab
The MIT D-Lab is dedicated to building capacity and resilience through participatory design. Community members are trained to devise and implement solutions that meet local needs across a wide array of sectors, including education, engineering, public health, finance, and more. Some of the D-Lab projects I have been affiliated with include the following:
Working with communities to design and prototype novel latrines in Awasa, Ethiopia, as part of a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiative with Population Services International;
Mentoring female coffee farmers on business and marketing strategies in Esteli, Nicaragua;
Developing and implementing a two-week intensive STEM/sustainable design curriculum applicable to the Ugandan context, as well as annually leading a group of undergraduate students on a development trip to Soroti, Uganda.
Patrones Hermosos
I have taught the fundamentals of coding and computational thinking to young women in rural Mexico through the Patrones Hermosos (Beautiful Patterns) initiative at MIT. I have also trained subsequent generations of Beautiful Patterns teachers.
